What is SRS Crash Data?
SRS crash data is critical information recorded in a vehicle’s airbag control module (ACM) during a collision, including details on airbag deployment, vehicle speed, and seatbelt tensioner activity. This data locks the module, disables the safety system, and activates a dashboard warning light, often requiring professional service to clear it from the system or replace the module. Clearing this data involves specialized tools and software to reset the module and restore the airbag system to functionality, or sometimes necessitates replacing the control unit entirely.
- Definition: A record of the collision event stored in the airbag control module (ACM) or Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM).
- Information Recorded: Details like vehicle speed, seatbelt tensioner activation, and airbag deployment status are logged.
- Purpose: The data acts as a digital record of the crash event, crucial for accident reconstruction and insurance purposes.
What it records: An Event Data Recorder (EDR), often part of the SRS control module, records vehicle information in the moments leading up to and during a crash. This can include:

What happens after a crash: After an accident, the module locks to permanently store this crash data and may turn on the airbag warning light. The module must be reset or replaced by a professional after repairs, as standard diagnostic tools cannot clear this “hard” crash data.
Why is it Stored?

- Module Reset Service: Many auto services offer a module reset service that uses proprietary software to erase crash data and return the module to a reusable state.
- Module Replacement: In some cases, especially after a severe crash, the control unit may be damaged and requires replacement with a new or used unit.
