Valid, lawful reasons for odometer correction are limited to situations where the displayed mileage no longer reflects the vehicle’s true recorded mileage due to repair, replacement, or malfunction of the odometer or instrument cluster. Common examples include replacement of a faulty mechanical or digital gauge cluster, replacement or reprogramming of a malfunctioning instrument control module, or restoration after damage from an accident or water intrusion where the original odometer mechanism was destroyed. Another legitimate scenario is when an odometer becomes inoperable due to electrical faults or software errors and must be repaired or replaced so the vehicle can once again record mileage properly. In all of these cases the intent is to restore accurate mileage recording or to repair an equipment fault.
