For independent repair shops and advanced technicians, performing J2534 reprogramming on Honda
and Acura vehicles requires a compliant Pass-Thru device, the official Honda software, and an active subscription to the manufacturer’s Service Information System (SIS).
Software and Subscriptions
American Honda offers a diagnostic software subscription for standard diagnostics and reprogramming as well as a subscription for Vehicle Security Professionals
To access Honda’s official software and calibration files, you must purchase a subscription through their website.
- i-HDS software: The “i-HDS Diagnostic Software Suite,” which includes the ECU Reprogramming Application, is compatible with generic J2534 devices and is required for reprogramming.
- The i-HDS subscription provides users access to the i-HDS software suite, featuring dealer-level diagnostics and ECU reprogramming capabilities.
- When coupled with a Service Information System (SIS) subscription, the browser-based i-Troubleshooting tool can guide users with step-by-step diagnostics. Linking a Honda/Acura specific J2534-compliant vehicle communication interface further enhances diagnostics with live access to the vehicle’s data stream.
- Vehicle Security Professional – Same features as the i-HDS subscription, but with vehicle security access. You must be a registered member of the National Automotive Service Task Force Vehicle Security Professional (NASTF VSP) registry to purchase Key & Immobilizer codes.

Hardware Requirements
You must have a compatible J2534 Pass-Thru device and a Windows-based PC that meets Honda’s minimum system requirements.
- J2534 device: Honda does not recommend a specific device, but you can find many options from aftermarket suppliers. Examples include:
- Battery maintainer: A stable 13.5-volt power supply is recommended during reprogramming to prevent interruptions that could damage the ECU.
- PC with Windows 10: Recommended specifications include a 2.6 GHz Intel or AMD processor, 16 GB of RAM, and an NVME Solid State Drive with 60 GB of free space, according to Honda techinfo.
- Internet connection: A high-speed connection is needed to download the large software files.
Reprogramming Procedure
- Subscribe to Honda techinfo: Purchase a subscription to SIS and the i-HDS software.
- Connect hardware: Connect the J2534 device to your PC and the vehicle’s OBD-II port. Connect a stable power supply to the vehicle’s battery.
- Use i-HDS software: Launch the i-HDS ECU Reprogramming Application on your PC.
- Identify vehicle and updates: The software will automatically read the vehicle information and check the online database for available updates.
- Begin programming: Follow the on-screen prompts. The software will download and install the new calibration files onto the ECU.
- Verify completion: Once the flash is complete, the software will prompt you to cycle the ignition. A report will be generated showing the previous and new program IDs.
- Perform relearn procedures: After reprogramming, you may need to perform an idle relearn procedure.
