- J2534 Pass-Thru Device: You need a J2534-compliant interface. Kia has tested certain devices, including the Drew Technologies CarDAQ-Plus 3. Other options that support the protocols include:

- PC Requirements: Minimum requirements include a 2.4 GHz processor or greater, 4 GB RAM, 20 GB free hard drive space, and Windows 7 or 10 Pro (32 or 64-bit).
- Stable Power Supply: A high-amperage (at least 30A) regulated power supply is critical to maintain voltage and prevent ECU damage during programming.
- High-Speed Internet: Required for downloading software and calibration files.
Reprogramming Challenges and Considerations
- Software Functionality Issues: Multiple reports from independent technicians indicate that the Kia J2534 software can be inconsistent or may not recognize available updates specified in Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs).
- NASTF Loaner Program Workaround: Due to the software issues, some technicians have used the NASTF loaner program to borrow an official Kia dealer scan tool (KDS) to successfully perform the reflash.
- SGW (Security Gateway Module): Newer Kia vehicles have an SGW. Accessing this for diagnostics or programming may require specific procedures or validated tools that can bypass the gateway, often needing VSP credentials.
- Official Dealer Tool: The official dealer tool is the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS), which uses a tablet and VCI II interface and typically provides more reliable and comprehensive functionality across all modules.

A single set of programming hardware consists of personal computer(PC), standard interface to a device driver and an interface hardware that connects between PC and a programmable ECU of vehicle.
The main purpose of this regulation is to program ECUs for all vehicles using a single set in the field.”
Kia J2534 Diagnostic Tool Software:
The Kia J2534 Diagnostic Tool software is available for use on 2018 model year and newer Kia vehicles sold in the United States market. Utilizing Kia’s J2534 Diagnostic Tool software to diagnosis Kia vehicles requires a current paid Kia J2534 Diagnostic Tool subscription and a compatible SAE J2534-1/2 compliant pass-thru vehicle communication interface (VCI) device.
Compatible SAE J2534-1/2 compliant pass-thru VCI devices, firmware, and Application Program Interface (API) that have been tested and approved by Kia Motors America, Inc. (KMA) as of this software’s publication date (as noted below in the “Software Details”). KMA does not recommend the use of non-approved SAE J2534-1/2 compliant pass-thru VCI devices.
NOTE: The Kia J2534 Diagnostic Tool software does not provide access to Kia Immobilizer and Smart Key systems. These systems must be accessed by a Vehicle Security Professional (VSP). For additional information, please visit the NASTF website: www.nastf.org.
