Reprogramming may not fix your issue, reprogramming usually is recomended if there is a TSB is avaliable and specifies reprogramming for a certain issue.
Mazda
J2534 reprogramming utilizes specific Mazda
software applications and a compatible Pass-Thru device to update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on applicable vehicles. Access to the required software and calibration files is granted through a paid subscription to the Mazda
Service Information website.
Software and Subscriptions
Mazda
offers different software depending on the vehicle model year:
- Mazda
Module Programming (MMP): Used for programming Powertrain Control Modules (PCMs) on most 1996 and later Mazda
vehicles (except 1996-2005 Miata/MX-5 models, only 2006+ are covered). - Ford
Diagnostic & Repair System (FDRS): Used for 2018 and later sixth-generation models.
A subscription to the Mazda
Service Information website is required to download and use this software and access the necessary calibration files.
- Important Note: MMP and Ford
’s equivalent software (FMP/FJDS/FDRS) cannot be installed on the same computer; you must uninstall one to use the other.
PCM Reprogramming Codes
A PCM Reflashing subscription allows you to program the Powertrain Control Modules on applicable Mazda
vehicles (sold in the United States and Canada) to the latest calibration level.
NOTE:
- Mazda
MMP and Ford
FMP cannot be installed on the same computer. You will need to uninstall one of them to use the other. - For issues with MMP/MDSFA software, use the “Contact Us” submission at the bottom of the page.
The subscription includes access to download a software application that you can install on a PC.
For 2018 and later 6th generation models (2018 Mazda3, 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2018-2023 MX-5, 2018-2020 CX-5 and CX-9, and 2018-present Mazda2 and CX-3):
- Current MDSFA Release = MDSFA 140.00, released 09/15/2025 – For latest version see Mazda Techinfo
- Update version = MDFSA 140.04 – For latest version see Mazda Techinfo
NOTE: For 7th generation models (see MDARS page for vehicles), MDSFA will not work. A MDARS subscription will need to be purchased to reflash the PCM or key reprogramming using a Mazda
VCM-II or certain pass through devices listed on the MDARS page.

NOTE:
Calibration updates are for PCM (ECU) only. Medium speed CAN modules (BCM and other modules) cannot be reflashed using the MMP program and J2534 device. They must be programmed using IDS.
You may be required to access Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) when programming a module. A Service Information subscription is not included, but can be purchased separately.
All 1996 models and later can be reflashed except for Miata. Only 2006 Miata (MX-5) and later can be reflashed.

Hardware Requirements
To perform Mazda
J2534 programming, you need the following equipment:
- J2534 Pass-Thru Device: A J2534-compliant interface is necessary to act as a communication bridge.
- Opus IVS CarDAQ-Plus 3: A professional-grade, multi-protocol interface that is compatible with Mazda
software. - Topdon RLink J2534 Pass-Thru Programmer: This device supports Mazda
and is available from various merchants like Amazon. - Xhorse MVCI Pro J2534: A more budget-friendly cable that supports Mazda
and is available from Amazon.
- Opus IVS CarDAQ-Plus 3: A professional-grade, multi-protocol interface that is compatible with Mazda
- Computer: A Windows PC (Windows 8, 10, or 11 are supported, 64-bit recommended) is needed to run the Mazda
software. - Stable Power Supply: A high-amperage battery maintainer is essential to prevent damage to the ECU from power interruptions during the reprogramming process.
- Reliable Internet Connection: A stable connection is vital for accessing and downloading the software and calibration files from the Mazda
service website.
Programming Limitations
It is important to be aware of the following limitations when using a J2534 device with Mazda
software:
- PCM Only: The Mazda
Module Programming (MMP) application is designed to flash only the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). - Other Modules: Other modules on the vehicle, such as the Body Control Module (BCM), cannot be reflashed using the generic MMP program and a J2534 device; these may require the official dealer-level IDS tool.
IDS Software
- All IDS software licenses will expire December 31st of each year purchased. Annual renewals will be available each January 1st. New pricing will be available at the beginning of each quarter (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-Dec).
- Mazda
IDS software can only be used with Mazda
VCM II. It cannot be used with a pass thru device and the VCM I is no longer supported. Mazda
VCM II hardware is purchased separately – see “VCM II” tab. - IDS software is only for 6th generation vehicles and earlier. MDARS is needed for 7th generation vehicles (see MDARS page for vehicles).
- Mazda

IDS subscription will also get you access to MDARS, a cloud based software, for 7th generation vehicles. - MDARS can also be purchased for 72 hours or 30 days like PCM reflashing software (MMP/MDSFA) because they will not work on 7th generation vehicles.
- After 100 days of non-use, your MDARS password will have to be reset. This will take at least one day to have Japan send a password reset email.
