Module Reprogramming starts from $300+ Older Models
Reprogramming may not fix your issue, reprogramming usually is recomended if there is a TSB is avaliable and specifies reprogramming for a certain issue.

J2534 reprogramming requires a paid subscription to the Subaru Technical Information System (STIS) website to access the necessary software and calibration files, along with a compatible J2534 Pass-Thru device.
Software and Subscriptions
Subaru’s diagnostic software is called the Subaru Select Monitor (SSM).
- SSM3 and SSM4/SSM5: SSM3 covers older vehicles (1998-2014), while SSM4 covers 2015 and newer models, and SSM5 is the latest cloud-based version.
- FlashWrite Software: This specific application within the software suite is used for the actual programming. The software can be downloaded from the STIS website with an active subscription.
- Subscription Options: Subscriptions are available in various durations from the official Subaru website:
- 72 hours: Approximately $34.
- Longer options (e.g., annual) are also available but can be significantly more expensive.
- Dedicated PC: Subaru requires that the PC used for its SSM software have only Subaru software installed on it due to potential conflicts with other manufacturers’ diagnostic drivers.
Hardware Requirements
You need specific hardware to connect the PC to the vehicle:
- J2534 Pass-Thru Device: You need a J2534-compliant interface. While older SSM3 software only worked with specific Subaru devices (like the Denso DST-I), SSM4 and newer work with many aftermarket J2534 devices. Examples include:

- Topdon RLink J2534 Pass-Thru Programmer: Supports Subaru and other manufacturers; available from various merchants and Amazon.

- Mongoose Plus Subaru
- Computer: A Windows-based PC, ideally running Windows 10, that meets the system requirements specified on the Subaru tech info website.
- Stable Power Supply: A high-amperage (at least 30A) regulated power supply is critical to maintain constant voltage during the programming process and prevent damage to the control module.
- Reliable Internet Connection: Necessary for downloading software updates and calibration files from the Subaru cloud server.
Important Considerations
- Irreversible Process: Once an ECU is reprogrammed with a new calibration, the old calibration cannot be restored. The new software may change vehicle characteristics (e.g., idle speed, shift points) to address emissions, economy, or warranty issues.
- Follow Instructions: It is crucial to follow the step-by-step instructions provided by the manufacturer precisely to avoid “bricking” or damaging the ECU during the process.
- Updates are Cloud-Based: During the reprogramming process, the necessary calibration files (.pfc files) are retrieved from the Subaru cloud server via the internet connection.
What are J2534 reprogramming capabilities available?
Subaru reprogramming files using a generic (non-OEM) SAEJ2534 pass-thru vehicle programming device are available by contacting Service Technical Information Company toll-free at 1-866-428-2278. The cost for the CD-ROM with all reprogramming files is $75.00 plus S/H and applicable state tax. Files will be updated four (4) times per year, in CD-ROM format, with all available reprogramming service information at the same above offered cost. Authorized Subaru Dealers are provided the same reprogramming information.

Subaru J2534 Reprogramming software meets the latest available J2534-1 specification. Our Reprogramming J2534 Files chart does not specify the Calibration Identification Number (CID); however, this information is included in our offered CD-ROM.
Note: The ECM or TCM being reprogrammed may already contain some or all of the reprogramming files listed in the Reprogramming J2534 Files chart shown by release date. It is possible to damage the vehicles ECM/TCM during the reprogramming event. Once the reprogramming process has started, it is recommended not to interrupt the process until the event is completed. If you experience any problems, please contact your scan tool maker for further instructions.
Are all pre-2004MY Subaru vehicles compatible with J2534?
No. Subaru has no reprogramming capability for model years 1996-1998. Starting with our 1999 model year, please see our Reprogramming Pre-J2534 Files chart for affected model reprogramming information.
Both pre-J2534 reprogramming and J2534 pass-thru reprogramming files are included in the offered HDS kit software for aftermarket service provider application.
