Summary
In some geographic areas, ambient temperatures reaching below 40°F (4°C), including high levels of humidity, an operator may experience engine stalling, low performance, and/or poor aftertreatment performance. This is caused by condensation accumulating and freezing within the Charge Air Cooler (CAC); affecting air flow into the engine. DESCRIPTION
In some geographic areas, ambient temperatures reaching below 40°F (4°C), including high levels of humidity, an operator may experience engine
stalling, low performance, and/or poor aftertreatment performance. This is caused by condensation accumulating and freezing within the Charge Air
Cooler (CAC); affecting air flow into the engine. This article lists currently available winter front covers that can be installed on the front grille and
bumper to reduce cold air flow to the engine compartment.
PROCEDURE
International-approved winter front grille covers should be installed to limit air flow through the cooling module. International-approved refers to any
parts that can be purchased through the International parts system. We are currently bringing a Canadian supplier up to speed, and their contact
info and P/Ns are not listed in this article. However, their covers are not available through the parts catalog at this time and can be purchased
directly from them at any time.
Engine overheating and damage can occur if the Winter grille & CAC covers are closed
when ambient air temperatures are above 35°F (0 °C) To ensure proper engine operation,
the cover flaps should be opened or remove the cover completely when ambient air
temperatures exceed 35°F (0 °C). (For S13 see comments below)
Winter grille covers that have large slots and do not cover the bumper opening are not
effective in preventing CAC freezing. In extreme cases, when operating below 0°F (-15 °C),
it may be necessary to use a cover for the CAC.
Winter grille covers are NOT recommended for 8.8 PSI propane and gasolineequipped buses.
A26-equipped vehicles require air flow of 25% across the cooling package. In extreme
cases, engine de-rates will occur due to charge air cooler (CAC) efficiency.
S13 equipped vehicles require the front grill to be completely covered with a winter grille
cover when the air temperature is 40°F (4°C) or colder while driving on open roads at
highway speeds. When operating stop/go in the city or at extended idle periods where the
air temp is 40°F or higher the cover flaps may need to be opened or remove grille cover
completely depending on environmental conditions.

1. These Covers are NOT compatible with High Cab MV(DuraStar) or High Cab
HV(WorkStar).
2. Flush-mount bumper assumed for all compatible vehicles.
RECOMMENDATION: When available, shutters should be ordered to automatically
compensate for cold temperature operation.
