CUSTOMER COMPLAINT
This is unlikely to be a customer complaint but will be noticed during an oil change or vehicle
inspection with low mileage.
CAUSE
During the assembly process of the engine and transmission, a high‑viscosity assembly lubricant
is applied to the mating surfaces to facilitate proper installation and initial operation. Under
normal driving conditions, exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce the viscosity of this
lubricant, occasionally resulting in the appearance of an external oil leak. It should be noted that
assembly lubricant differs significantly from standard engine oil in that assembly lubricant's
viscosity is substantially higher, and when removed from a surface it leaves a tacky, adhesive
film, as opposed to the lighter smearing characteristic of engine oil.
REMEDY
Do Not Replace Parts. Clean off residual lubricant, perform a test drive and lift the vehicle to
ensure residual assembly lubricant is no longer present. This TIN must be documented in the
Repair Order as the remedy.
