Summary

SITUATION
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be triggered by the erroneous fault code:
BA0023 - Control unit: internal fault (software group fault) In addition, the BA0008 - CCU, internal
coolant temperature sensor: Signal implausible faults may be stored in the CCU memory.
However, AC charging will still operate as designed, without any related drivability complaints. Affected
PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) vehicles with CCU_P1 (7.4 kW and 11 kW) with I-levels from …24-07500 to …25-11-5xx.
CAUSE
Unfavorable Combined Charging Unit (CCU) software will lead to erroneous faults BA0023 and BA0008 to
be stored which will trigger the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
CORRECTION
In the event an Affected Vehicle arrives with the issue stated above, proceed as follows:
Determine what is the vehicle’s current I-level by either using AIR or the Key Reader/Aftersales Workplace
(AWP) application.
When the vehicle’s I-level is lower than …26-03-500:
1. Please do not proceed; the ISTA version with the update that corrects this software issue is
expected to be available as of March 2026
2. Clear fault codes “BA0023 and BA0008”
Note:
Until ISTA I-level 26-03-500 is available, this issue (malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and fault
memory entries faults BA0023 and BA0008) can occur multiple times.
If AC charging is working as designed and there is not a charging complaint, exchanging the CCU
will not eliminate the problem and is therefore not permitted.
Please inform the customer that there is no operational problem with the vehicle, and that a software
update is expected in March 2026. The vehicle should be released back to the customer, and it

should be documented in the repair order so that the customer was informed of the situation.
If a customer refuses to pick up his/her vehicle, the area team should be contacted immediately.
Vehicles should not sit at the dealership awaiting the software update.
Note for BMW Roadside Assistance:
The fault may occur at home or public charging stations. In this case:
Disconnect the charging cable
Secure the vehicle and allow it to go to sleep, then start it again
The customer may drive to the workshop without assistance to receive the new I-level.
