SITUATION
After replacing the Multifunctional Display (MFD), the Central Information Display (CID) is black. The
backlight of the CID is illuminated, and touch function does register an audible sound.
CAUSE
The replacement Multifunctional Display (MFD) is from a different supplier than the original.
CORRECTION
Update the vehicle software and add SA 8WM – “Control D” to the Vehicle Order via Conversion.
PROCEDURE
The Multifunctional Display (MFD) replacement parts are changing supplier from Continental to InnoLux. This
change in MFD hardware has a different video coding on the CID side. Due to this coding difference, the CID will be
black after replacement, even though the backlight will illuminate, and touch function gives an audible response.
When replacing the MFD due to a failure, make sure to check the information sticker on the replacement component
for the manufacturer. If the original part was Continental and the replacement part is InnoLux, the vehicle software
will need to be updated and the conversion “Replacement of display cluster in the case of replacement parts”
will need to be performed.
This conversion will add SA 8WM – “Control D” to the Vehicle Order. This change will trigger the proper video coding
for the replacement MFD version (InnoLux).
Note: The specific coding needed for this conversion to function with Head Unit 4 (HU-H4) is contained in ISTA
Version 4.57.29 and later. Make sure you use the latest ISTA version.
If the original MFD is a Continental and the replacement module is an InnoLux, perform the following steps:
1. Verify ISTA 4.57.29 (released January 13, 2026) or higher is installed at the dealership.
2. Install the replacement MFD (InnoLux) in the vehicle.

3. In ISTA, select the conversion “Replacement of display cluster in the case of replacement parts” using the
following path:
Vehicle Management
Vehicle Modification
Conversion
“Replacement of display cluster in the case of replacement parts”
4. Perform the conversion.
ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Connect the battery charger to the vehicle
Connect the programming system to the vehicle (ISTA 4)
Select “Replacement of display cluster in the case of replacement parts”
Determine measures plan
Accept and fully work through the measures plan with the control units to be programmed/encoded and enabled
Follow the rework list
Depending on the rework list, carry out a vehicle test and delete the fault memory if needed
After the programming has been fully completed, check the functionality of the system.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA, refer to Dealer Universal Portal / TIS / Technical
Documentation / Diagnostics and Programming / Programming Documentation.

Vehicle Programming and Encoding – Additional Work (RO and Claim Comments Required)
This procedure automatically reprograms and encodes any vehicle control modules that do not have the latest software Ilevel.
If one or more control modules fail during the reprogramming procedure, claim the required consequential
repair work procedures to address this issue (including performing the IRAP Control Unit Recovery first as
required, refer to the SIB in AIR) under the Repair Code in this bulletin together with the corresponding labor
operation codes and their flat rate unit (FRU) allowance(s), including the diagnosis* that applies.
Please explain the additional work procedures that were performed (The why and the what) on the repair order and in the
claim comments.
For covered repairs that address control module failures that occurred prior to performing this
reprogramming procedure, claim this work with the appliable Repair Code listed in AIR together with the
corresponding labor operation codes and their flat rate unit (FRU) allowance(s), including the diagnosis* that
applies.
