RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM REAR OF HEADLINER

THIS REPAIR IS MOBILE FRIENDLY
THIS REPAIR IS REMOTE SOFTWARE UPGRADE (RSU) FRIENDLY

MODEL
E-Series
F96

Model Description
X6 M, Competition

Production Date
From SOP

SITUATION
A “rattling” noise may be heard from the rear portion of the headliner when traveling over rough surfaces.

CAUSE
The rear headliner support brackets are not tightly fitted to the roof.

CORRECTION
Install felt tape (red sections) on the left and
right support brackets where they contact the
metal roof.

Note: This repair does not require fully lowering the headliner. Please refer to the procedure below. A
plastic pry tool and protective body tape are recommended to avoid damage and / or marks on the
components.

PROCEDURE
1. Remove the left and right D-pillars as per REP 51 43 320 (left) and 51 43 322 (right).

Use caution on the D-pillar trims’ sharp edges.
2. Verify the noise coming from the brackets
by tapping upwards lightly several times in the
direction of the red arrow.
3. Once the noise has been verified to be
coming from the brackets contacting the metal
roof, the grey push-rivets (to left of the red
arrow) that hold the bracket in place need to
be removed at the same time.

4. Once the rivets are removed, the brackets
can be pulled and held gently down with your
fingers up to 2 inches from the headliner
mounting point (per red distance line), no
farther.

5. The 2 inches should allow enough
clearance to install the pieces of felt tape.
6. Cut the pieces of felt tape to a size of 20
mm x 15 mm. Apply as shown on the bracket
to prevent further metal-to-metal contact
between the bracket and the roof.
Press firmly on the entire felt tape surface for
maximum adhesion.
7. This repair is to be performed on both
headliner rear support brackets.

described in step 2.
