tension damper requires replacement or not.

This information refers to the "Alternator drive belt tension damper’’ and the "Air conditioning belt tension
damper’’
Guidelines regarding the replacement of a Belt Tension Damper
1. Perform a thorough inspection for any active fluid leaks around the engine and associated components
while the engine is running.
Start the engine and allow it to idle for approximately 5 minutes to reach stable operating conditions.
2. Perform a condition check of the relevant drive belt.
Refer to the serviceability guidelines within ElsaPro Repair Group 13 – ‘Drive belts – To Check’
CAUTION
Before commencing work on and around the engine, ensure that it has cooled sufficiently. Failure to do so
may cause injury to personnel.
3. Replace the belt tension damper is any of the following is present during inspection.
•
Active oil leak on the belt tension damper is present, replace the relevant belt tension damper.
•
Belt condition not in line with serviceability guidelines, replace the relevant belt tension damper and
drive belt as required.
•
Noise which has been identified by the customer. Replace the relevant belt tension damper. And drive
belt only if it is not in line with serviceability guidelines as required.
If replacement is required as per the conditions stated above. Raise a Full Technical DISS query with the
required information and wait for approval.

NOTICE
Figure 1 below shows an example of dry oil stain marks on the belt tension damper. In this instance, the
belt tension damper SHOULD NOT be replaced. Unless it is accompanied by a customer complaint of
noise or a drive belt not compliant with serviceability guidelines.

In the event dry oil stain marks as shown above (figure 1) are spotted at service and no complaint of noise is
received from the customer with the drive belt confirmed as OK as per serviceability guidelines. The
operative should clean the affected area using a suitable cleaning agent. DO NOT replace the belt tension
damper in this scenario.
