NOTICE

This technical bulletin 2080145/* should also be followed when technical product information 2073038/* is
indicated by a GFF test plan.

Workshop findings:

The customer statement can be reproduced.

The following diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored in the Battery Regulation Control Module -J840(Diagnostic Address 008C):

DTC

Description

Status

B203400

Pre-warning excessive temperature active/static

NOTICE
If this DTC occurs during or immediately following a high-voltage battery repair, then this technical bulletin
does not apply.
– Check that any previously removed wiring harness connectors are fully seated.
– If the problem cannot be found and corrected, then contact VW Group Technical Assistance Center
(TAC) and mention TB 2080145 in the comments.

Technical Background
Potential malfunction in the vehicle high-voltage system.

Production Solution
Not applicable.

Service
Order of steps to follow:
1.

Move vehicle to the quarantine area and readout battery measured values

2.

Hold in quarantine for 5 days with evaluation of battery temperature measured values

3.

After 5-day quarantine period – perform GFF test plan for DTC B203400

DANGER
There is a risk of fatal injury due to high voltage. Electrocution by direct contact or electric arc can cause
severe bodily injury or fatal injury. When working on the high-voltage system and/or high-voltage battery,
the safety precautions and qualification levels given in the repair manual must be observed. Completion of
High-voltage expert (HVE) training is required for working inside the high-voltage battery.

CAUTION
The DTC memory must not be deleted prematurely!
– In steps 1 and 2 below, take care to end the GFF session using the “stop” function (in the data menu)
instead of a normal GFF diagnosis exit!

1. Move vehicle to the quarantine area and readout battery measured values:

Park vehicle in a suitable quarantine area for 5 days according to the repair manual:

Repair manual > Engine > General Information - High-Voltage > 93 Electric drive > High-Voltage
Vehicles, Handling > Quarantine Concept

Start a GFF diagnosis session with the ODIS tester and proceed as follows:

Read out DTC memory of all control units in the entire vehicle.

Read out all measured value blocks (MVBs) from the high-voltage battery (diagnostic address
008C).

Send the GFF log online.

End the GFF session using the “stop” function only (in the data menu).

CAUTION
If communication with the high-voltage battery is not possible (diagnostic address 008C not identified),
then contact VW Group Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and mention TB 2080145 in the comments.

2. Hold in quarantine for 5 days with evaluation of battery temperature measured values:

Two times per day, at least 6 hours between readings:

Read out all measured value blocks (MVBs) from the high-voltage battery (diagnostic address
008C).

Evaluate battery temperature sensor values (cell module temperatures) using criteria noted
below.

Send the GFF log online.

End the GFF session using the “stop” function only (in the data menu).

NOTICE
Criteria for evaluating battery temperature sensor (cell module temperature) values:
– If one or more temperature values increase up to or slightly more than 3°C (Celsius) compared to the
outside ambient air temperature, the vehicle must remain in quarantine, and the temperature values of
the high-voltage battery must be checked regularly.

– If one or more temperature values increase significantly more than 3°C (Celsius) compared to the
outside ambient air temperature, there is an acute risk of fire! In this case, the vehicle must remain in
the quarantine area and the local fire department must be informed.
– If the temperature values remain constant/do not rise compared to the outside ambient air temperature
(+/- 2°C) within the 5-day quarantine period, continue with 3.

3. After 5-day quarantine period – perform GFF test plan for DTC B203400:

Start a GFF diagnosis session with the ODIS tester:

Perform the GFF test plan that corresponds to DTC B203400 Pre-warning excessive
temperature.

Perform any resulting work according to additional GFF test plans and/or the repair manual.

NOTICE
GFF test plans corresponding to any additional DTCs present in diagnostic address 008C such as cell
voltage sensing, balancing circuit, or temperature sensing faults may only be performed after the minimum
5-day quarantine period and completion of the GFF test plan corresponding to DTC B203400.
– If the above steps do not resolve the complaint, then contact VW Group Technical Assistance Center
(TAC) and mention TB 2080145 in the comments.
