Summary
FUEL FILLER TUBE LOWER SEAL IS LEAKING AND DTC P0456 IS STORED IN THE ECM IF YOU CONFIRM The vehicle has a visible leak with a smoke machine test coming from the fuel filler tube lower seal, AND DTC P0456 is stored as “Active”, “Past”, or “Pending” in the ECM. ACTION 1. Remove the supplied funnel from the rear of the vehicle or trunk. 2. Insert the funnel completely in the fuel filler tube and remove completely five (5) times. 3. Re-check the fuel filler tube lower seal with a smoke machine to determine visually if any leak is present. 4. If the fuel filler lower seal continues to leak, replace the fuel filler tube. not apply to vehicles with a fuel cap.
IF YOU CONFIRM
The vehicle has a visible leak with a smoke machine test coming from the fuel filler tube
lower seal,
AND
DTC P0456 is stored as “Active”, “Past”, or “Pending” in the ECM.
ACTION
1. Remove the supplied funnel from the rear of the vehicle or trunk.
2. Insert the funnel completely in the fuel filler tube and remove completely five (5) times.
3. Re-check the fuel filler tube lower seal with a smoke machine to determine visually if
any leak is present.
4. If the fuel filler lower seal continues to leak, replace the fuel filler tube.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
To avoid risk of severe personal injury or death, follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in
the ESM when working on or near a fuel system.
1.
Remove the supplied funnel from the rear of the vehicle or trunk (Figure 2 and
Figure 3).

Insert the funnel completely in the fuel filler tube and remove completely five (5) times.
HINT: The funnel must be inserted and removed completely to open and close the
lower seal inside the fuel filler tube (Figure 5).

Re-check the fuel filler tube lower seal (Figure 5 on page 3) for leaks with the smoke
machine to determine visually if any leak is present from the lower seal.
a. Remove the engine cover and locate the purge control solenoid in the engine
compartment (Figure 6).
b. Disconnect the hose from the purge control solenoid (Figure 6) that goes to the
fuel tank to allow access for the smoke machine.
c. Insert the smoke machine port into the hose that was just disconnected.
d. Turn on the smoke machine to fill the system with smoke.
e. Check for smoke leaking from the fuel filler tube with a bright light (Figure 7).

If no leak is present, the procedure is complete, and no further action is needed.

If the fuel filler tube continues to leak at the lower seal, replace the fuel filler tube.
