Symptom/Vehicle Issue: GMET4 DOHC Water Pump Coolant Leak Inspection
Models: 2024 - 2026 – Wrangler (JL/J6), Grand Cherokee (WL), Tonale (GC), Hornet
(GG), Commander (H1), Compass (MP/M1), Giulia (GA), Stelvio (GU)
Customer Complaint/Technician Observation: The customer’s complaint may
include coolant odor or observation of fluid leakage under the vehicle.
Discussion: REVIEW THE FOLLOWING INSPECTION POINTS TO IDENTIFY ALL
POTENTIAL LEAK SOURCES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BEFORE
PERFORMING PARTS REPLACEMENT.
Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Suspected Engine Coolant Leak
Check the coolant level of the suspected vehicle before starting the engine:
• If the coolant level is significantly reduced:
▪ Perform visual inspection of the entire engine cooling components using UV
light (including all cooling system hoses, hot bottle/coolant reservoir/expansion
tank, radiator, HVAC heaters, etc):
▪ If the leak source is identified, please proceed with the leaked component
replacement.

A. Coolant Leak Between Pump and Block:
• Leak at block interface is likely due to gasket damage
• Inspect gasket – If gasket is broken, torn, split, or has lost compression
Replace gasket with new
• If pump spins without obvious sticking, pump should be reused, otherwise replace
entire pump assembly

• If leak appears to originate at internal gasket – Replace with new pump assembly

C. Inlet Pipe to Pump Interface:
• Leak at inlet pipe interface is likely due to loss of torque of fasteners
• If pump spins without obvious sticking, pump should be reused, otherwise replace
entire pump assembly along with Inlet Pipe assembly.

D. Water Pump Weep Hole:
New Vehicle (<500miles)/New Water Pump Inspection:
• Trace coolant or residue may be found at the weep chamber plug. The presence of
trace coolant residue does not indicate a failed pump. The presence of liquid
coolant is unacceptable at any time.
• If coolant is dripping from the weep chamber:
o Raise the vehicle.
o Verify that the coolant is effectively dripping from the weep chamber.
o Run the engine at idle and perform repeated speed variations between 2000
and 4000 rpm.
o Maintain this procedure for 15 minutes.
• If after 15 minutes the coolant is still dripping:
o The water pump must be replaced (possible permanent damage to the
dynamic seal).
o If the coolant stops dripping:
o No further action is required.
o Remove coolant traces with a towel from the WP
o The vehicle can be released/returned to the customer.

Customer Vehicles (>500 miles)/Original Water Pump:
• Trace coolant or residue may be found at the weep chamber plug. The presence
of trace coolant residue does not indicate a failed pump. The presence of liquid
coolant is unacceptable at any time. If dripping coolant or traces of liquid coolant
at the weep chamber are found, replace the pump.
*** Note: Some coolant residues may be found at the water pump weep hole plug area
which may be normal, but coolant should not be dripping from this location as in the
following picture:

OK PUMP:

The coolant leak cannot be repeated
Less contamination range around weep hole
NO wetness without contamination when
contacting the leak marks with paper towel
NO coolant dripping frome the pump after
starting the engine

E. Inlet pipe Nipple:
• If nipple interface area shows signs of coolant pooling or dripping replace inlet pipe
assembly
• If interface shows signs of coolant pooling or dripping – replace Inlet Pipe Assembly

Report (QIR) button in Service Library. Please include pictures showing the source of the leak.
See a screen shot below from the QIR system in Service Library for reference.

repair performed, as this information helps engineering accurately identify root causes and
improve future service processes.
