SITUATION
1. Noise complaint:
Humming or clicking type noise in the speed range of 15 – 65 mph can be heard from the rear axle. See
attached video “V33 01 26 Humming” and “V33 02 26 Clicking”
The noise may be amplified depending on road speed.

2. Fault memory entry:
Customer has Dynamic Stability Control malfunction indicator lamp and/or related Check Control Message.
The following fault codes are found in the Integrated Brake module fault memory:
4809B7: Wheel speed sensor - rear left - tooth missing
4809C2: Wheel speed sensor - rear right - tooth missing
480AB4: Wheel speed sensor - rear right – noise monitoring
480AAD: Wheel speed sensor - rear left – noise monitoring
CAUSE
1. Noise complaint: Insufficient protection allows water to ingress directly into the wheel bearing which can also lead to
corrosion of the wheel bearing inner race.
And / or:
2. Fault memory entry: Foreign particles/corrosion at the interface to the wheel speed sensor.
CORRECTION
Replace both rear axle wheel bearings.
PROCEDURE
1. Noise complaint:
Replace both rear axle wheel bearings as per REP 33 41 180 Replacing the rear wheel bearing.
2. Fault memory entry:
Perform vehicle test and confirm Integrated Brake system fault memory entry of one of the listed fault codes:
4809B7: Wheel speed sensor - rear left - tooth missing
4809C2: Wheel speed sensor - rear right - tooth missing
480AB4: Wheel speed sensor - rear right – noise monitoring
480AAD: Wheel speed sensor - rear left – noise monitoring

With fault code verified, replace both rear axle wheel bearings as per REP 33 41 180 Replacing the rear wheel
bearing.

BMW Group’s AIR Application Resource for Flat Rate Labor Operation Codes
To obtain the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance information from the BMW Group AIR application
resource, start by entering the Chassis Number (last seven (7) characters of the VIN), and click on the
“Search” icon. If the “Vehicle Selection” window displays two or more model possible vehicle choices, select
the applicable Model, or enter the full VIN (17 characters) instead to proceed. Click on the “Flat Rate Units”
button and enter a flat rate labor operation code number “without spaces” in the field to the right, click on the
“Search” icon to display the corresponding listing of “Flat rate unit group details” that are available and their
corresponding FRU allowances.
Maintenance Program - BMW Ultimate Care + Full (With Brake Pad Coverage)
If the vehicle has an active BMW Ultimate Care + Full maintenance program with brake pad coverage and
the Rear Brake Pad Service task shows Recommended, Due or Bundling Eligible (BE), then:
Perform the Rear Brake Pad Service task in conjunction with the above repair, and
Reset the CBS data
Only submit and claim for the brake pad service task-related parts (No labor) under the BMW Maintenance
Program Brake Repair Code that applies.
