SITUATION
A customer may state that there is a “rattling” type of noise heard from the front axle while slow speed
driving between 15 – 25 mph over rough road surfaces.
CAUSE
Various external influences can cause premature aging of the tension strut hydro-mount elastomer; which
can lead to cracks in the material, and leakage.

CORRECTION
Replace both tension struts with tension struts containing rubber conventional mounts using part numbers:
31 10 8 864 693 Left
31 10 8 864 694 Right
PROCEDURE
Inspect the tension strut hydro-mount for damage.
Note: A defective hydro mount bushing requires picture documentation uploaded to the WarrantyApp under
the identifier:
SI B31 03 26 Tension Struts Hydro Bushings
In the event of at least one defective tension strut rubber hydro-mount, replace both the left and right
tension struts with the improved conventional rubber mounts per REP31 12 050.
A mixed installation of both variants is not allowed.

To obtain the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance information from the BMW Group AIR application
resource, start by entering the Chassis Number (last seven (7) characters of the VIN), and click on the
“Search” icon. If the “Vehicle Selection” window displays two or more model possible vehicle choices, select
the applicable Model, or enter the full VIN (17 characters) instead to proceed. Click on the “Flat Rate Units”
button and enter a flat rate labor operation code number “without spaces” in the field to the right, click on the
“Search” icon to display the corresponding listing of “Flat rate unit group details” that are available and their
corresponding FRU allowances.
