ECU/PCM cloning refers to copying the data – firmware, calibration settings, immobilizer/anti-theft pairing, and sometimes vehicle-specific configuration – from one engine control unit (ECU) or powertrain control module (PCM) into another so a replacement module behaves exactly like the original. This is used when a module has failed or been damaged and a shop needs the replacement unit to match the vehicle’s VIN, key transponder registrations, and engine calibrations so the car runs correctly and passes security checks. Cloning can preserve custom calibrations and adaptations (for example factory or dealer calibrations carried out for emissions, fuel maps, or transmission behavior) and avoid the need for complete reprogramming.
