Summary

This is the 4th time car is unable to start after being parked for one day and it had to be jump starting. At first I thought it was some accessory, specifically a dashcam and aftermarket ambient lights, so I disconnected both and I even turned off the wireless charging pad and disable the function to turn the lights on when doors open and it didn't help, dead car again after 1 day parked. Car was purchased new in august of 2025 and this issue started this past january coincidentally after an OTA update in december. Today, I got the 12v battery tested at my local Advance Auto Parts and battery health came out good, battery level was low (as supposed after a jump start) and it only recommended a recharge. So the issue lies inside the electrical system of the car and to my surprise this parasitic draw is not new, in online forums a lot of owners talk and complaint about this specific issue, even here I found a similar complaint and I wonder why there's not at least a technical bulletin from KIA addressing this issue. Finding out the cause of the battery draining fast is imperative because if overlook this can evolve into something more serious because we don't know what it is that is "always on" drawing big amounts of power and can clearly be classified as a fire hazard. I remember having the same issue with my old car, a 2019 Kia Sorento EX, and it was solved with a simple computer update (NOT the map or infotainment update), it was a firmware only available at the dealership. I just hope this could be the case this time and KIA can respond in a timely manner to solve this issue.

Summary

Loss of engine propulsion while traveling down a highway towing a #5000 trailer at 65 mph. Less than five miles before the failure the vehicle experienced a momentary downshift of the transmission such as you would experience while climbing a hill or extreme headwind. No warning lights were present at that time or at any time prior to engine shutdown. Upon failure panel indicated "Press Engine Start" and transmission indicated "Park" though we were rolling/coasting at over 60 mph. Realizing that we had lost propulsion I guided the vehicle to the shoulder and stopped. Solid check engine light on at this time. Depressing the "Start" button while stopped would not start or crank over the engine. Boost box would not crank engine, slight noise from starter as if unable to turn engine over. Called tow truck, Seewald's Towing in St. Ignace, MI. Towed to nearest Chevrolet dealer Wheeler Motors Cheboygan, MI.

Summary

Gateway system module failed during the L87 recall service. The major L87 recall (ECM update) is a major, high-load software update that frequently causes the Gateway Module to "brick" or stop communicating during the update process resulting in failed module immediately following the service. (TSB) speak to this, The L87 recall is a safety-critical repair, a failure of a module directly caused by this repair should be covered under a recall warranty or GM warranty. Safety can be affected as warning lights will not work due to this failure. Timeline of events. As soon as warranty service was completed before leaving bay lights were not working like Onstar etc, app wouldnt connect to car, 1-2 hours after leaving service engine light came on in car. Never had an engine light on before. Took back to dealer who said it was a computer issue they corrected it. 2 hours later engine light was back on. My car has been at the dealer since Monday when they called to say the GSM had internal failure and wanted to charge me to replace it despite this internal failure being in response to the warranty service that was provided, There are Technical service bulletins about this issue, this has been a known issue with GM vehicles, My timeline shows strong evidence that the failure is a direct result of the recall repair. There is GM TechLink documentation that these modules can be ruined if the update process creates a high load. GM needs to extend the GSM repair/recall or extend coverage for this repair when this happens. This is just another thing GM is not taking responsibility for.
