Summary
The car suddenly reduced lane assistance and steering assistance functionality. After calling Tesla they said it is not a software issue. I checked the service mode and it indicated a malfunction in the steering assist motor, which apparently costs $3500 to replace. Online, I have found many complaints about this problem that are not resolved by software updates. In addition, there was a large number used steering assist motors for sale online which indicates a more wide spread problem. This is not normal for cars to have this failure prematurely and is a serious safety hazard. I read online that some had their steering EPAS get locked while driving on the highway and nearly destroyed their Teslas

Vehicle Model: RANGE ROVER EVOQUE
Model Year: 2016
Summary
I am reporting a steering failure on my 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vin# [XXX] . The electric power steering assists motor separated from the steering rack due to the retention bolts that were severely corroded and snapped. The failure occurred without any warning, lights, messages, or prior symptoms. The vehicle became undriveable and posed a serious safety risk due to the loss of steering. A LandRover dealer in Bedford, NH has confirmed that the retention bolts corroded and fractured, causing the steering gear motor to detach from the rack. The repair requires replacement of the entire steering gear assembly. I have written repair estimate confirming this diagnosis. There is an existing recall (N632) addressing steering rack bolt corrosion on similar vehicles, but my vin was excluded. However the failure mechanism in my vehicle to the condition described in that recall: bolt corrosion to steering separation. This vehicle was operated in Maine, a high road salt environment. The failure occurred without driver negligence and appears to be a materials/design issue rather than a maintenance - related. Given the catastrophic safety risk of sudden steering failure, I request that this issue be reviewed for expanded recall consideration. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed with a misfire in cylinder #3, and the spark plug and ignition coil were replaced. The contact was unsure if the stuck spark plug was removed the second time the vehicle was repaired. Most recently, the contact noticed that while the vehicle was in park(P) and left running, the vehicle was idling roughly. The message "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" was intermittently displayed. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, left the vehicle running, exited the vehicle, opened the hood, and there was no smoke or steam present. The contact returned to the vehicle and noticed that the temperature gauge was indicating that the engine was HOT. The contact drove back to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion in cylinders #1, #2, and #4. The contact was informed that the coolant reservoir was empty, that the spark plug in cylinder #3 was stuck, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic for a second opinion, who diagnosed coolant intrusion in cylinders #1, #2, and #4, and that the spark plug was stuck in cylinder #3. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The dealer notified the manufacturer of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

Summary
We had a recent recall completed for the hybrid battery/charging sytem where a software update was all that was required. Two weeks after a recall for the hybrid battery/charging system was completed, while traveling, we had a loss of power at 70mph in heavy traffic, and our vehicle stopped operating. We were able to limp our vehicle to the right shoulder, and was stranded on the side of I-75 south in GA, approximately 200 miles from home. The dash lights began flashing on and off, the various systems began flasing warnings and there was a burning smell of plastic. We discovered one of the electric lines attached to the fuse block in the engine compartment had melted at the terminal junction on the fuse block. This rendered us incapable of moving our vehicle. We had to call for a tow truck to have the vehicle taken to a shop. Our daughter had to come from 6 hours away to pick us up. Currently, 02/20/26, the shop that has our vehicle, is trying to get a replacement fuse block and determine if this is part of the recall that should have fixed our original recall issue.
